drying your own rose petals?

I got a beautiful array of pink, orange, white, and yellow roses for Valentine's Day. The pink ones already drooped (strangely) so I pulled the petals off and laid them out on a sheet of parchment paper.  Has anyone ever used these home dried roses in soaps or other recipes? Do you think it could work?

I have not but I have read about it - my understanding is the rose petals turn brown.

I've dried roses from my own rose bushes and the red roses do turn brown (especially over time). The pink and white roses hold some color but they are never as pretty as the dried rosebuds I purchase from say Mountain Rose Herbs. I'm pretty sure the commercial roses we get for holidays and the like are heavily sprayed with pesticides, etc. I think there is some sort of gel (silica?) you can purchase to dry the flowers in which will help them keep their lovely color.

The roses and hibiscus (whole flower and leaves) were still alive and fresh when I started the process.  I did not wait for them to die.

A neighbor gave me the hibiscus flowers from her garden and didn't have any extra sprays, etc. on them; the roses came from the florist . . . who knows what was sprayed on them.

I rinsed them well with cold water and let them sit out to air dry overnight.  When they were air-dry I froze them (whole).  When I was ready to use them I defrosted them and proceeded to grind them.

Come to think about it, the flowers were never dried. I guess they were more like fresh-frozen.  They did not loose their color and the petals were still soft   Huh

I used the rose petals in my Pomegranate Rose Soap . . . which isn't ready yet.

Opulence! My God! what a great suggestion.
The roses are drooping pretty quickly now, but most are still in the vase of water and are opening.  I kind of want to wait until they at least droop before I bust them up. I will wash and freeze them though, thanks.
The recipe I'm dreaming up I can't due (ha ooops, I meant DO.. must be a Freudian slip) until May, at least. I'd love to have it ready for Mother's Day, but that obviously won't happen. This is one I don't want my hubby to do, it's sort of a tribute to the baby... but I want to meet her first.

Stampin . . . if you're doing a tribute to your baby girl, yes, you have to meet her first and yes, you'll have to make it yourself.

Glad I can help.

Has anyone ever had herbs that they used that weren't traditionally dried mold in their soaps? Seems to me I read somewhere it could happen but I could be wrong.

I hope those rose petals work out! I wonder if drying them in a dehydrator and then putting them in the soap after the soap has cooked (HP) would prevent them from turning brown. Hmmmm. Certainly worth a try. Great idea!

Other than that, I always dry herbs from my garden, in the dehydrator, to use in my soaps.
